The True Purpose of Music

Dear Youth,

If I were to ask you the question: "What is the true purpose of music?" I would probably get many different answers. But there is really only one true purpose of music, and Ellen White describes this in Messages to Young People p. 293: "Music was made to serve a holy purpose, to lift the thoughts to that which is pure, noble, and elevating, and to awaken in the soul devotion and gratitude to God" The true purpose of music is to give glory to God, but is all the music that we listen to giving glory to God? The true purpose is to glorify God, not to entertain us.

It saddens me to hear the music that many of our young people are listening to today. They think that because they listen to what is called "Christian Rock" that it is OK because it is "Christian". However there can really be no such thing as "Christian Rock" because the word Christian means Christ-like, and is rock music Christ-like? It certainly isn't. Many youth today think that they can listen to this music and they will be fine, but you can't. Whether you like it or not this music will slowly change you. This music is the same as what the world listens to, only there are different words. But the music is still there, and it is drawing many young people out into the world. It is one of Satan's greatest deceptions for young people today. "Satan has no objection to music, if he can make that a channel through which to gain access to the minds of the youth". It is a way in which he can gain access to our minds. That is very scary, knowing that through this music Satan can reach our minds.

It seems that the youth today are trying to become as close to the world as possible without leaving the church. But we are not to love the world. We are to stay away from the things of this world. 1 John 2:15 says; "Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world". Why do we want to have the things of this world and try and follow Jesus at the same time? We can't. If we are to follow Jesus all the way we must give up the things of this world. "And be not conformed to this world" (Romans 12:2).

Ellen White was given a vision regarding a group of youth that had gathered together and this is what she says: "Angels are hovering around yonder dwelling. The young are there assembled; there is the sound of vocal and instrumental music. Christians are gathered there, but what is that you hear? It is a song a frivolous ditty, fit for the dance hall. Behold the pure angels gather their light closer around them, and darkness envelops those in that dwelling. The angels are moving from the scene. Sadness is upon their countenances. Behold they are weeping. This I saw repeated a number of times all throughout the ranks of Sabbath keepers" (Messages To Young People p. 295). The angels weep as they see these gatherings.

Jesus is calling for you to put away the things of the world. Why not surrender everything to Jesus, He is waiting for you to come to Him and He will help you overcome your desires for the things of the world.
